Combining Animations of Varying Lengths

This tutorial and graphics are ©Neophyte

This is simply to help you learn to combine two animations which do not have the same number of frames. In this lesson, the length/speed for both animations will be the same.

However, one animation has 5 frames, while the other has 8 frames.

The leprechaun can be found here.

The rainbow stars can be found here.

They are mng files, so you will need to open them in Animation Shop.

Clearly, the two animations are not compatible as they are, so we must make them compatible. In order to do that, you'll need to dust off some mathmatic skills......not a lot, but a few....lol

We need to figure out the lowest common denominator for them. Doesn't that take you back to sixth grade math class?

I think it's easiest if you take the number of frames in the longer animation and double it, then see if the number of frames in the shorter animation will divide evenly into it. If it does, fine. If it doesn't, then triple the number of frames in the longer animation and see if the number of frames can be divided evenly into it......and so on.

In this case, it's pretty easy. The lowest number that both can be divided into is 40. 40 can be divided by 8 evenly and 40 can be divided by 5 evenly.

That means that we will need 40 frames of each animation.

The rainbow stars animation has 5 frames to begin with. Edit and Select All....Copy....highlight frame 1 and Paste Before Current.....highlight the new frame 1 and again Paste Before Current. Repeat until there are 40 frames.

The leprechaun walking animation has 8 frames to begin with. Edit and Select All.....Copy....highlight frame 1 and Paste Before Current.....highlight the new frame 1 and again Paste Before Current. Repeat until there are 40 frames.

Edit and Select All to both animations. Slide the sliders all the way to the left.

Personally, if I'm dragging frames, I like to situate the animations on the work area, so that the frame 1 of one is above the frame 1 of the other or overlapping it a bit. That eliminates any frames moving.

Put the cursor on the frame 1 of the leprechaun and drag it onto the rainbows and place it where you want it. Release the cursor when you have it in position.

Be sure to put these on a background of your choice rather than transparent to keep the lines clean. Add any caption and other images you want. I think the speed/length is best set from 10-14, but all should be the same whatever you choose.
